Three steps to your first censer

Resin burns on charcoal, not on its own. Here is the short version. Each step links to a full guide.

  1. 1

    Light the charcoal

Hold a quick-light disc with tongs over a flame until sparks cross the surface. Set it in the burner and wait until a light grey ash covers it.

  2. 2

    Add a pinch of resin

Place a few grains on the hot charcoal. A little goes a long way, so add more only when the smoke fades.

  3. 3

    Choose a burner

A ceramic burner for the table, or a hand censer for prayer. Either way, use a heat-safe surface and keep a window open.
